Liesl photographs Marcia and Ward at the Landmark Theater

liesl February 27th, 2007

I loved going into Marcia and Ward’s home during preparation time. Old wallpaper mixed with wood floors, modern paintings and of course images from Ansel Adams gave their home a mod vintage feel that made me feel comfortable right away!

This image was shot with a tilt shift lens, and lets you see a view from one room through the hall and into Marcia’s room. I love the vintage look of the lace on her dress, and how it just fits with the texture of the wallpaper. You can glimps into Marcia’s bedroom and see the clean modern look she has given it.

Marcia let me in close without a thought. She was naturally graceful and expressive!

I love seeing kids at weddings!

This is Marcia’s double cousin! Their dads are brothers and their mothers are sisters, how cool is that! You can tell she is so excited!

More fun with the tilt-shift lens!! I love it!!

I loved shooting at St. Patrick’s beautiful Catholic Church in Syracuse!

Marcia and Ward were not short on smiles. Indeed for a good reason, one of the bridesmaid’s dresses fell apart during the ceremony!!

I am so thrilled to have had the opportunity to learn about lighting from my awesome husband, Neil Cowley! I used room lights to really make The Landmark Theatre in Syracuse, NYshine!

They were really swing dancing, I nearly got plowed over, but I loved it!

What an awesome party!

These two were so easy. “Go hang out over there,” I said. Yea, it’s that easy.

Home for the Holidays celebration">Home for the Holidays celebration

Neil January 2nd, 2007

Sally & Josh planning their wedding the Saturday before New Year’s eve and had a great celebration in Skaneateles. Sally prepared at the Sherwood Inn with her nervousness showing just a little bit:

The nervousness made for some good portraits though.

The ceremony was at the historic Willard Chapel in Auburn where I caputred a cute series with Sally & her dad.

Ah, story - what I try to make pictures about. I love that Josh’s mom is sticking her hed out, the flash is going off and it just sums it up perfectly doesn’t it?

The reception was finely detailed…

…with a sense of humor.

The evening continued with many more classic wedding moments that I was able to capture.

It was interupted however, by a surprise fireworks display!

Everyone looked like they were having a good time.

Cheers to Sally & Josh for the oppotunity to document your lives - thanks for being so fun.
AND - post the recepe for those passion fruit martinis! I need a few more of those

A Foreign Tradition: Taiwan + America

liesl October 18th, 2006

On October 7 I had the pleasure of photographing two people who were so in love it was catching! Jason and Anne are from Taiwan, and when I chatted with them over the phone I picked up on an important detail: they wanted me there so they can show their family what the American tradition of a wedding is like.

Jason and Anne met at Syracuse University so they flew in from California to be married at the courthouse. My job was to tell the story of this foreign tradition as clearly as possible. Additionally, architecture and streets are quite different from their native land, so I did my best to describe their environment as well.

I took the mental approach that everything was new and foreign, since I had no idea what the traditions were in Taiwan. I do not know if any of our customs are common, so I kept my eyes peeled.

There was hardly a serious moment with these two, their laughs were contaigious.

Jason was prone to scooping up his tiny bride and swinging her around. A habit I quite enjoyed.

As I mentioned, the architecture was important to them.

They also wanted me to incorporate signs into the shots!

Jason and Anne wanted some photos on the SU campus as that is where they met. The funny thing was, it just happened to be Homecoming Weekend! They got some funny looks from some funny looking people!

But of course, they made the best of it!

I tried to see details in a new light, as I felt they speak volumes of the traditions of a wedding day.

I hope your family enjoys all the images and the slideshow! Congratulations and have a safe trip!
