A Day In The Life of My Hair . . . and other musings of consequence . . .
liesl April 24th, 2008
Goodness sakes it was time for a haircut. And in a most urgent way, as I am traveling next week and need to make a good impression. The following photo shows the impression I was not intent on making!
So who does Liesl call when she needs a cut? Well the same person she has been calling for the past 4 years, Scott Miller. Now a lot of people ask me “Why do you go to the most expensive stylist within a 100 mile radius???!!”Well I have many answers for that. If you have ever met me, you would know perfectly well that I positively refuse to style my hair. Because I prefer to be lazy on a daily basis concerning styling techniques, I require a very good cut. Now why would I choose Scott? Certainly there are many stylists out there who are capable of cutting my hair, right?(big thanks to Lindsey, Scott’s assistant, for photographing the metamorphosis)
The first reason is that I like to work from personal referrals. I asked a friend with good taste and style who she thought was the best at cutting hair in the area, and she knew Scott and recommended him right away. Personal referrals are key to any business, so this is how our relationship started.

The second key to keeping my business? Style. Scott listens to me and understands what I want. Which must be quite a task, because all I ever say is, “My hair is long. It bothers me, I want it short and I don’t want to ever have to touch it.” He patiently smiles at me and proceeds to give me a rocking haircut EVERY time. One that I never have to touch or style, it just looks effortlessly good! Now that is worth every penny, and more. (And truth be told, his cuts last longer than any other I have ever had, adding even more value to his outstanding service).

The last key to sticking with Scott was relationship. Over four years we have not once talked about shoes or handbags. I like successful business owners, I like to hang out with them and talk with them about real life issues. We talk about business, photography, art, investments, our families and other significant topics. And yes, sometimes we talk about parties and music, too.
Isn’t he cute?!

Personal referrals, service with style and relationship. The same 3 keys that I wish to fuel my own business will keep me coming back to Scott, every time.
So the next task of the day was to work on these 3 keys. Me and my new haircut took a trip to visit a client who needs an album cover refinished. Yes, I could ask them to ship it to me. That would save time, right? But in the long run I believe service and relationships are worth my time! Besides, my hair enjoyed the drive.
(Warning, this stunt was performed by a professional photographer using a Canon 1D MarkII while driving 65MPH on a major highway. Do NOT attempt at home. I repeat, this was done by a professional)

Now look at this beautiful scene that my hair was able to enjoy!!!

After some refreshing scenes with my client my hair knew it was time to get to work. This is my new hair working. Yes, I took this myself. I am a jedi.

More hair at work.

Liesl,
WOW! I am so blown away by what you did. You have a great gift at photograghy and at writing, but I have to say what impresses me most is what an amazing person you are. Thank you so much for creating such a brilliant piece of work that presents me in such a complementary way. I am so grateful and touched that you would do this and I also want you to know that I LOVE cutting your hair and hanging with you when you come in. Hope to see you soon.
